By far the largest town in the Northwest Territories , Yellowknife has little more than 18,000 residents. Its distance from the more easily accessible areas of Canada (1508km to Edmonton ) hasn't prevented the small city from growing and modernising.
Yellowknife derives its name from Native peoples who used copper-bladed knifes. Since the gold rush in the 1930s and 1940s Yellowknife 's population of non-Natives has grown steadily. Most employment and business centres around the territorial government and tourists who come to fish, camp and escape.
