Burnaby - British Columbia

Burnaby is the third most populated city in BC (Vancouver and Surrey are first and second) with over 195,000 people. Even with such a high population, Burnaby still has one of the highest parkland to resident ratio in North America.

The City was influenced by the growth of Vancouver, to the west, and New Westminster to the east. The land was originally used for agriculture to support these two other communities, and now it serves as a transportation passageway from the outlaying GVRD communities and the urban centre of Vancouver. Burnaby is the geographical centre of the Greater Vancouver Regional district.

For commuters, Burnaby offers two SkyTrain lines: The Expo Line which runs along the Southern area of the city and the Millennium Line which runs through the centre of the city, parallel to the Expo Line.

Many of these commuters work in the national or world headquarters for some of the world's biggest companies including Electronic Arts, Cero, Ballard Power Systems, Telus, eBay, Chevron Corporation, and Petro-Canada. Other residents may travel to one of the two major post secondary institutions in Burnaby: Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain, or the British Columbia Institute of Technology near Metrotown Mall.

After working hard all day long, Burnaby residents have no problems finding places to spend their money. BC's largest shopping centre, Metrotown Mall, has over 500 shops, 16 movie theatres, and 2 major grocery stores. Within walking distance of the mall is also a city Police Station, Public Library, and a SkyTrain Station.

If you want to get away from the busy city, spend a day at the Burnaby Village Heritage Museum. Here you can find out what it was like to live in 1920s Burnaby. They also feature a fully restored 1912 CW Parker Carousel that you can ride while listening to a 1925 Wurlitzer organ. Then, end your day in the rose garden and park on top of Burnaby Mountain, which boasts fantastic views of Burnaby, Downtown Vancouver, and the North Shore.
